The system on which this occurs uses the i810 driver, but another system with 
the same driver works.  The video  hardware on the non-working system is 
reported as: 
 pci.subsys_vendor = 'Dell'

  pci.product = '82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]'
  info.vendor = 'Intel Corporation'

while the working system has:
'Foxconn International, Inc.'

  info.vendor = 'Intel Corporation'

It also works with some ati 3d rage pro systems I have.

As an aside, xorg seems to have some bugs in the ati driver of a
different sort (can't switch resolution useing ctrl-alt-keypat+/-) so
this may be growing pains.

I'll test when I can, but the system with problems is my mother's so
working on it only happens on weekends.
