Just to confirm, you do have the French dictionary installed, correct?
Under
Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages->Default languages for
documents
You will see an icon "ABC checkmark" next to the left of the language
name if the dictionary is actually installed for it. I doubt it will
have been installed by default since your system appears to be
configured for English USA setting "LANG=en_US.UTF-8".
