The more recent package changelog for jaunty says:
gdm (2.20.8-0ubuntu4) jaunty; urgency=low
* debian/control.in:
- Don't explicitly depend on gnome-session. When installing gdm on its
own, this causes all of gnome to be pulled in too. gnome-session is
already a depends on the appropriate metapackages that will be using
it.
Instead of adding xfce4-session to the field value, I think it could be right
remove gnome-session from Depends.
