Chris, I wasn't aware at the time of any other instance of synaptic running, ie: no other applications open on screen. Although here are some more details to add which had not come to mind earlier : There are 2 users on the system, 1 administrator and 1 user. I had given administrator rights to the user temporarily in order to install some games on their desktop. At the time of the error I was logged in to the user account. I later found that when logged into the administrator account, perfoming the same task (installing applications) met with no problems at all. I also realised it was not necessary to enable administrator priviliges on the user account in order to install games. I hope this helps.
