Well, I was able to run the above mentioned Linux distributions on my
Acer only with acpi=off (there are probably some other acpi options that
would allow systems to boot). Yet, since ACPI was off I could not make
LAN to work.

Nelson, can you confirm that Ubuntu 8.10 does not need switching ACPI off to 
run on Acer?
Because then I will try to install it, perhaps even today.
