Well, the package name, that changed, has been "kpdf", not "kubuntu- desktop" indeed. Therefore, the transitional package should be named appropriately.
I personally don't need kubuntu, however there are two apps that don't have an appropriate equivalent. K3B and KPDF. None of them depends on "kubuntu-desktop" and can be installed separately. Can You imagine that?
