Public bug reported:

This is an amd64 installation.  I have run alsa-info.sh and the result is under 
 http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=070d41ec1747cc7b88b2658635c2c9822af55cd5. 
As you can see I checked that all levels are very high.
Skype complains when selecting default input sound setting, it does not when 
selecting HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0), however no sound is recorded by skype test 
Also gnome-sound-recorder does not work: both with panel mic and with headset 
mic it produces just white noise and only if Front Mic Boost is full blast. 
Even in that case the the level meter is uncorrelated with the input. Sound 
reproduction, other than from recording, is OK.
