I had the exact same problem attempting to boot the generic kernel after
upgrading from dapper to edgy.  The 386 kernel would boot fine, but the
generic would hang before the splash screen.

I have a Sony Vaio SZ2XP that is dual core and has SATA hard disk.

I did exactly as mentioned above:

added libata to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and ran

$ sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.17-10-generic

I could then boot using the generic kernel, and /proc/cpuinfo shows both
cores.
