The default language of all documents is changed per
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10606#c3 :
"The "Default Language" option in the Set Language dialog is for setting the
default language for new text in that document, not for setting the default
language for AbiWord. It should be detecting your language based on your
keyboard layout, but you can override this by uncheckin a box to that effect in
Preferences. You then have the option of opening "normal.awt" and changing the
default language there, which will have the result you expect."
Since spell checking is working with the final release of Xubuntu 8.10,
I am closing this bug report.
