In answer to your question how did I upgrade:
A notice popped up in Gnome telling me there were updates for 7.10. After
completing the installation of all the 7.10 updates another dialog box appeared
stating that I could automatically upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04.
I clicked ok to start the upgrade, but not all packages were updated.
