Okay, I will try that.

I want to share my few thoughts about this. Recently I've moved to
ubuntu 8.10 amd64 thanks to flash 64 and java 64 plugins, anyway with
fglrx 8.12 release, the building package for ubuntu is fixed so trying
this method I've installed fglrx first on live CD, I was really shocked
and happy that finally everything looked normal, I mean
fglrxinfo/glxinfo/amdcccle. So without a second thought, I've installed
x86_64 and done the same thing, but now on fresh install. Unfortunately
I was back to the start.

Anyway with a little tries and changes, I've came with this thing. I always had
fusion-icon added to autostart, and with it fglrxinfo/glxinfo looked like
before. But when I removed it from autostart, and ubuntu booted to metacity
(compiz turned off) fglrxinfo says :
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8304 Release
As you can see, it's a little improvement. Games reports that now I'm using
OpenGL 2.1 and most of all, they works without any problems. I've tried to
investigate a little in that direction, so I've changed xorg.conf a little, but
that didnt bring more help.

Situation looks like this : fglrxinfo/glxinfo states that everything is
perfectly fine. Games/OpenGL programs works but amdcccle stills report
mesa mode.
