I think I had the same problem the start up progress bar with ubuntu
logo was not looking "pretty" I tried changing different settings in
xorg.conf but no change. Then I looked at usplash.conf and it was set to
1900x1200 thinking this was the problem I reduced it to 1600x1200 no
change, but then I changed it to 1280x1024 and that solved the problem.

I am thinking that the problem could be that xorg.conf does not support
the higher resolution or something so the splash image will be a
different resolution then the xorg base (or something), lines will thus
wraparound distorting the image.

usplash.conf is just:

xres=1280
yres=1024
