I've had the same problem. I've still got sudo access, but some of the functions under the System->Administration menu were broken. The workaround I've hit on (based on other slightly different by similar problems discussed on the ubuntu forums) is to create a new group called admin
$ sudo groupadd admin and then add your default user to that group $ sudo addgroup $USER admin This seems to have fixed it for me.
