Did you type a "run" and so on as described on that page?
Also it could be better only to use -dbgsym packages and not mixed up
with -dbg. Dunno for sure though.
Do you have actually apport enabled? If you are running the Ubuntu Stable
Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.
Apport can report crashed, if they happen when you are not running the
application in gdb.
