I have recently installed ubuntu 8.04 on this computer; I am in a
network where I have to pass throught an http proxy to connect to the
internet.
I frequently receive the message 'Could not connect to database' during login,
on when I execute certain programs from the terminal.
I get it about 10 or 15 times during boot.
I also get it when I start synaptic, and my mysql and apache log messages are
full of warnings like this.
I don't understand to which database this message refers. It could be related
to popularity-contest.
I have set the http_proxy and HTTP_PROXY correctly in my .bashrc file, and
other programs that use these variables work as expected.
