Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Firefox randomly began ignoring any attempt to use the Google search bar
in the upper-right, so I decided to try to uninstall it then reinstall
using apt-get. First, I did apt-get update, and then upgrade. When I ran
apt-get upgrade, the only package it found was "ubuntu-docs" and it hung
when it got past the unpacking stage (configuring, i think).
