I'm having the same issue.

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Aopen AKK77400N

I guess the SCSI emulation causes the kernel panic (both IDE ports works
perfect with kernels not emulating SCSI (Debian 4.0) (Ubuntu 7.10
Gutsy), but fails with Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.

Please set some kind of patch that make possible to enable or disable
SCSI emulation, without recompiling the kernel.
