The log looks strikingly similar to another report about of an Ubuntu 8.10 regressions with a Sony CD-RW: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12213
The "modprobe -r ohci1394" + "modprobe ohci1394" routine did help with that device though, sometimes at least.
