This is still a consistent problem in intrepid. I have a couple more observations to add.
First, it seems only to affect MS TT core fonts (such as Times New Roman and Arial. Although I prefer to use TT fonts that allow me to share documents with non-Ubuntu users, I've been forced to switch to things like Free Serif, which are not affected by the problem.
