I haven't messed with this error in a long time because I was able to
get the Samsung-supplied driver/application to work for scanning.

Trying again with sane apps (xsane, xscanimage), I discovered xsane
works if I evoke  the command as root; as a normal user, it seg faults.
Of course, xsane gives me a warning about running as root ;-)

I checked my user groups and find my normal login is a member of the
saned and scanner groups, so I'm stumped wondering what type of user
permissions I need.

I am now currently using Kubuntu 8.04. x86
