Actually, I meant that the indicator would be shown on the currently active display, whichever it is. (This is what the windows driver does.) I was probably thinking along "X driver notices changed display -> notifies something that will display the indicator", hence the package assignment. Poking around the hardware as you described would probably be hard and not very productive.
