I probably phrased what I said badly: I meant I changed the boot order of the disks. I did not reorder the disks.
Note that in the snippet I put in manually above, I type in root (hd2, 0) into super grub disk, i.e. the disk is still sdc. I have no idea why this gets me in through the boot CD, but not when it tries to read the same grub instructions from the MBR. -- Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install.
