I have the same problem with my HP Photosmart 635, which is just a USB mass storage device. I notice that in the older versions in which it worked, it would appear as a /dev/sdXX (e.g. /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1) device. In Ubuntu 8.10, it doesn't, and instead appears as /dev/usb-<something> or something like that. But attempts to mount that device fail. The camera itself claims to be connected to the computer though.
