Thanks much-ly for your help. I replaced my status file with your
corrected replacement and Firestarter and Synaptic are working now. I
decided to clone my hard drive before running fsck, in case of problems
which would require a re-installation, as I am on dial-up. I tried to
run fsck by booting in recovery mode but I get a warning message saying
running fsck on a mounted disk can result in data damage. What is the
correct way to run fsck safely.
