Public bug reported:

I have noticed after a fresh install of 8.10 that the X server comes up
blank on my screen after booting.  I can usually get it back in business
by using forst Ctrl-Alt F8 to switch to the boot log, then releasing all
three keys before switching back to the X console using Ctrl-Alt-F7.
Once it has started, sometimes switching away usng Ctrl-Alt-F(something)
and then switching back with Ctrl-Alt-F7 fails to produce an image, but
then switching away again and back brings it back.

I have looked in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what the difference is
between a successful switch and an unsuccessful one.  They are
identical.  The relevant bits from lshw concerning the display are as
follows:

compiz is installed on this system, as is VMware Server 2.0.  If there is any 
additional information required, please let me know.
