NVidia users may find enabling some performance options will help. The
nVidia forum suggests putting these in the Screen section of xorg.conf:

Option "PixmapCacheSize" "1000000"
Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "0"

Then run this after X has started:
# nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1

Read about the details here:

This worked very well for me (at least short-term). These options are
enabled by default in 180.06 and higher, which might explain some
success stories with upgrading the driver.

Both Xorg and compiz now idle at 1% cpu usage or lower, while Firefox
uses ~6% with 17 tabs open.

Note: I doubled PixmapCacheSize in my config.
