OK, I failed to realise that Hardy uses pm-utils (and the scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d) instead of acpi-support (and the scripts in /etc/acpi/suspend.d) to suspend and hibernate the machine. Sebastian Wiesinger posted a script at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307288 which solves the problem under Hardy.
