Thanks for your feedback, usplash likes to misbehave so I always make sure that isn't the problem first.
The next time you boot the computer and get the black screen, can you try and see if non-xserver terminals are working by using the key combination "ctrl+shift+F1"? You should see a text terminal with a login prompt. Where we go next depends on whether or not that is working.
