Barring more information from Shirish, my best guess is that in the
preferences dialog, the is-the-port-open test finished *after* he closed
the preferences dialog, so it was trying to update a port status
GtkLabel that no longer existed.
If this is the same bug -- it looks like it -- then this is fixed in svn
revision 6860 upstream.
