Sorry for my delay in responding to this bug.

This happens when the kernel network udebs don't ship a suitable driver
for your network card (yes, the card is already functioning, but that's
at the PXE level, not using a Linux driver). Could you:

1) confirm whether this bug still exists in Ubuntu 8.10;
2) if so, boot the Ubuntu 8.10 desktop CD and confirm whether it can make use 
of your network card;
3) if so, post the output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn' from the running Ubuntu 8.10 
desktop CD?
