bsdmainutils.prerm calls update-alternatives unconditionally in
Intrepid:
$ cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/bsdmainutils.prerm
#!/bin/sh
set -e
update-alternatives --remove write /usr/bin/bsd-write
so this is still a problem.
