Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.17
Since doing a fresh install of edgy, when there's is any significant
disc writing being done (extracting large archives, high speed download,
etc.), the system becomes totally unresponsive. This did not happen on
dapper at all, ever.
Nothing responds: audio, keyboard, mouse,video all hang/stop/don't
respond for a short period (0.1 - 3 seconds), all this repeats
approximately every 5-6 seconds. The heavier the disc writing, the
stronger the effect and the longer the "black out" lasts. Minimum to
trigger the effect seems to be about 1 MB/s. Disc reads never have any
problem. Inbetween these periodic hangs the system is completely
responsive and fully functional.
I tried with various discs (sata maxtor 6B250S0, sata samsung SP2504C),
controllers (using sata_nv, sata_sil drivers; not using raid), and file
systems (ext3, reiser) without any real difference.
Kernel log as well as hdparm report dma supported and enabled (udma6).
Disabling cpu frequency scaling (powernow stuff) makes no difference. No errors
logged, no data corruption on disc. No problems with this when using the
operating system from redmond either.
Kubuntu 6.10 with kernel 2.6.17-10-generic, 32bit install on AMD64.
Since the problem seems to be unrelated to any specific application, I
suspect it's kernel related; thus filing against linux-source package.
