"Unsupported updates" is probably not the best term for backports, which is 
what those are.  Newer versions of selected packages from later Ubuntu 
releases are added to the backports repository when requested.  

They are unsupported because backports does not receive formal security 
support like the Main component of a regular release.  Sometimes newer 
versions fix bugs, but they also bring regression risks, so it is 
appropriate that this not be enabled by default.
