First off thanks for helping make Ubuntu better by reporting this issue.
In order to better help you we will need a little more info to get your
bug assigned to best team in order to address it.
Can you provide us with the following to help make it a little easier
for everyone involved?
What version of Ubuntu are you running?
What is the version of xev that you currently have installed?
When you say you ran xeb and nothing happened, does that mean that the
xev box never popped up for you with the little square inside it? Or do
you mean that when you watch the output in the terminal and you press
other keys xev reports, but when you press the prev button nothing at
all is reported?
Does the multimedia panel light up when you try to press any of the
buttons?
Can you go to: System ---> Preferences ----> Keyboard Shortcuts, Click
on the corresponding row for previous track, then hit the previous
button to see if it takes the input and binds the prev button to the
previous track keyboard shortcut.

attempt what he did and hopefully it will work for you.
