Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic
Since 8.04 ubuntu includes the SCSI emulation on its kernel. This
provokes kernel panic when copying data from one IDE port to another.
The message is Kernel Panic not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle
task! or Kernel Panic not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
It can be fixed by compiling a custom kernel without the SCSI emulation.
I have compiled my own kernel 2.6.27.10 without this option and
everything works ok.
My devices are named as /dev/hdX instead of /dev/sdX.
I strongly suggest the ubuntu team to provide the generic kernel without
the SCSI emulation.
I've browsed the web and I saw a lot of people is having this issue.
