This morning my desktop appearance was almost right, except (as you may
just be able to see from the Screenshot attached) it decided to show
Computer, Network Home & Trash icons on desktop which have not appeared
before.

The bug is the variable appearance each morning is a 'lucky dip' rather
than a reliable, confidence inspiring result. The computer actually
works perfectly in every other respect as far as I can tell.

Most often desktop appearance is right (or nearly so, as this morning).
Sometimes only the desktop icons are missing (wallpaper , is there -
The picture of my adoring wife and handsome lil'ol me on holiday in the
Gredos Sierra, Spain). Consequently I have to go to 'places' drop-down
instead of simply clicking the appropriate desktop icon for the project
folder, which is mildly annoying.

Occasionally it presents in KDE default blue with no wallpaper and blue
folder icons rather than orange, with KDE icons instead of the usual
Gnome SVC on the top launcher toolbar (e.g. KDE circular rather than
Gnome square icons for Open Office, which are usually only in the lower
indicator bar).

I thought it may be updates which I load regularly, so I stopped
updating, and the effect persisted. Random 'features' are always the
hardest to trace, and this is hardly life-threatening, which is, I
suspect why previous bug reports have gone nowhere.

However, this bug does adversely impact my pet project objective, which
is to persuade some of my colleagues to swap their beloved cuddle-rug
(but now almost unobtainable) MS-XP for Ubuntu, rather than buy big new
machines which are going to be pre-loaded with Vista

My colleagues are brain-boxes who run heavy-weight stochastic Monte-
Carlo maths packages, but we have almost no programming skills per-se,
and, as Vista users in partner organizations seem very far from
delighted, we are a bit reluctant to do anything - except wait -
sometimes days - for these packages to complete! I am just the techie
who wants them to upgrade to Ubuntu so I can get their results out
quicker to make their customers happier and our bills paid on time.
