I was enable to get the sound output working :) Please note I use the german locales, so the english translation may be not 100%.
Right click the volume tool (Lautstärkeregler) on the panel and select open volume (Lautstärkeregler öffnen). A dialog opens and shows 2 property sheets. On the second one titled switches (Schalter) there are two check boxes for the output devices. On my laptop there where both unchecked. I enabled headphones and speakers and voila sound was working. My audio settings are on auto detection. Mixer is HDA intel (Alsa mixer). All apps now play sound. Just a minor problem in internet flash movies (eg. youtube). This problem I fixed by updating the flash browser plugin vom v9 to v10.
