Thanks for the reply, Pascal, but the managers of this bug report page long ago informed me that my problem was not actually a 'bug.' and so transferred it to the documentation forum, where it got several well- intentioned answers that led collectively to the solution of the problem: the Dell printer is not compatible with Linux; another printer was acquired which is. happy new year, Rick
