This is possibly related to the initial burning of the DVDs. Even
though burning the data DVDs completes successfully, a burned DVD could
not be read by the BIOS to see if it was a startup disc. I learned this
after leaving a disc in the drive by accident when restarting. The
drive made strange noises and the computer would not boot. After a
while, I had to manually eject the disc to allow the boot-up process to
continue. This happened before grub loaded. I think it was when the
BIOS was trying to check for a boot disc in the drive.

I hope this information helps to narrow down the problem. The DVDs
still work normally in my PS3 and I can sometimes get them to work on
the desktop computer where they were originally burned.
