I was able to reproduce all except the dark background change. The
confirmation is filed as bug 312503 , awaiting an amd64 backtrace from
the apport team. It will then be marked a duplicate of this bug, and the
report files made public.

** Changed in: xfce4 (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Medium
       Status: Incomplete => Triaged

** Changed in: xfdesktop4 (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: xfce4 => xfdesktop4

** Description changed:

  Note: I am not sure which package is responsible for this bug, so I
  chose a very general one as I know it is related to Xfce (i.e. this
  issue doesn't happen in Gnome when using nautilus).

  I have launched xfce-setting-show then clicked Desktop. The box " Allow
  Xfce to manage the desktop" is checked. Under the Behavior tab, and
  under Desktop Icons, "None" is selected.

  When I right-click on the desktop, the normal context menu does not
  appear. Instead, the set wallpaper disappears and the desktop becomes
  black.

  Then, I have to launch xfce-setting-show again. But this time I find
  that the aforementioned box is no longer checked.

  This has happened several times.
+
+ WORKAROUND: checking "Show desktop menu on right click" under the
+ Behavior tab.
