Per the following response I received from David, I'm going to close
this report for now.
"thanks for trying to help. I was running Linux on my laptop, but the
complication of this failed update, and a lack of space on my HD has
persuaded me to uninstall it. This won't prevent me trying Linux in
future. Thanks again for your help."
