I experienced the same symptoms described by the original poster with
Ubuntu 8.10 on my HP 2133. The problem was fixed by replacing xorg.conf
with the sample one provided at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133 (section Video Driver
Fix).
