I found a slightly different procedure to be effective, where David C's
was not.

Go to a login prompt using CTRL-ALT-F1
Login
$ sudo killall gdm
$ sudo killall hald
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo aptitude upgrade
$ sudo gdm

That worked for me.
