I was experiencing the same problem (no sound with VT1708B) and installed Jaunty and still didn't have sound. I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with video and audio on-board, a AMD Athalon 5050e, 8GB RAM. I installed Jaunty as an update to Ubuntu 8.10 (I don't know if that matters).
And just to pass on my video driver no longer worked in Jaunty. I selected the Nvidia 177 packages with the package manager and it came back that I needed the nvidia-177-kernel ... source package which I couldn't get through the manager. Now the system is hung.
