Mike, you have three soundcards according to the alsa-info script
output.

The first one (card 0), ALC888, has two outputs, one analog and one digital.
Second (card 1) is that your USB speakers seem to have its own soundcard output.
Third is audio output over HDMI (card 2). 

You can try to output sound to a specific card by trying the following
commands:

# analog ALC888
aplay -D plughw:0 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# digital ALC888
aplay -D plughw:0,1 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# USB speakers
aplay -D plughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
# HDMI
aplay -D plughw:2 /usr/share/sounds/question.wav

(Replace /usr/share/sounds/question.wav with another wave file if you
don't have it.)
