Public bug reported:

I've spent the last 2 days updating this old box from 7.04 to 7.10 ( had to use
alternate CD )
then to 8.04 and finally updated to 8.10..
but at the end of this update, apparently the new 2.6.27 kernel did NOT get
installed...
--
so sound does not work etc..
there is no indication of any 2.6.27 files or directories in /boot..
but apt-get is pulling new sound drivers into the 2.6.27-9 directory.. when I
tried to follow up with the issues on the sound driver not being installed.

So apparently, I need to update the kernel, but all of the bug reports
I've seen have been duped to the x86_64 grub.conf 3way merge issue..
(sorry maybe its only the red hat guys (ie fedora and centos) that call
those distros x86_64 rather than amd64 ? )

BTW everything seemed to work find when I ran the 8.10 live CD on this
machine.. too bad I can't use that to repair this install?

Description 8.10
Release 8.10

-- trying
sudo aptitude install linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic

---------------------------------------
expected - update from 8.04 to 8.10 would get me a system substantially the
same as tested with the liveCD
got - a system that doesn't boot graphically or support sound.. due to not
actually running the right kernel..

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
