I found out in the meantime that there is a fundamental bug with Live USB. It has something to do with a ram disk that is incompatible with a kernel upgrade.
I decided to do a *real install* on the USB device. I ran into another bug that a real install can not be done on a computer that has a hard disk. If the computer has a hard disk, the install routine will only see the HDD and ignore all USB devices. I could only get around this bug by using a laptop where I could pull out the HDD a bit, thereby the notebook had only the CD-ROM and the USB stick. Then it was possible to do a real install on the USB stick. By dropping the Live-USB installation for a real install, all problems with kernel upgrades disappeared. At this time, I can not recommend a Live-USB install.
