Sadly, I'm still stuck.

Following the advice in this link:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997506

I installed all of the various packages that weren't already present.
But when I try the very first thing suggested after that - open System |
Preferences | Sound and set the various entries - I discover that there
are no choices available in the "Default Mixer Tracks" pulldown. None
at all. The attached screen shot shows the window in question. Note
that the pulldown labelled "Default Mixer Tracks" is entirely empty and
grayed out.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed from here? Right now this
is an entirely quiet computer. While that has some advantages, it's not
*entirely* desirable.

Thanks.
