Public bug reported:
This is not a software bug. This is a *process* bug. The process that ends with
"Ok, we are releasing this (s*t)."
It was always obvious that Kubuntu took back seat to Ubuntu, but it was
generally
okay. Kubuntu 8.10 though takes it to the next level. I mean, who needs a
stable,
powerful, feature rich, customizable environment? I understand "release early,
release often". I understand "use your users as pre-pre-pre-alpha testers".
But come on!
How could you do this to your users?
This reminds me of windows 3.11. Without the stability, that is. And lacking
the
features. And with worse UI choices.
You would have saved a *huge* amount* of bandwidth if you just released a shell
script
that just got the GPS coordinates of the computer, send them off to a strategic
nuclear
command for the imminent strike, and then, for good measure, sudo-rm--rf-/ The
difference would hardly be noticed by the user. Think of the bandwidth! And
where is
my nuke, already?
I mean, I could talk about unworthy things like everything missing, nothing
working and
random crashes. But random crashes are for wimps. I mean a sudden black screen
is
so last century. And the flashing colours right after that, offer small
improvement.
But then I saw the thin horizontal lines of pixels, moving to the left,
changing
colours as if in a game of life. For a moment I thought that HAL was just born
on
my computer! History was being written, when something (probably X), tried to
restart.
And retried. And again. And again. It wouldn't respond to anything, so I had to
pull
the power. Well, that's an improvement. You have BSOD? We have HAL hunting.
A nice extra touch is when the keyboard stopped responding. Everything worked
(in the
Kubuntu 8.10 sense), but you couldn't write anything. Classy.
To sum it up:
I understand what "ten millennia before 'alpha' is even invented" means (first
hand
unfortunately), but I was under the impression that Kubuntu's target group
wasn't
the "no work ever done, but I browse in opcode" section. Well, I was probably
wrong, and if you don't fix the process bug described herein, you will promptly
get
all of it. All zero of it.
Sorry for the (I can't believe how I manage to restrain myself) tone. But
someone had to say it.
