Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.
Using LyX 1.6.1-1 on Ubuntu 8.10, I failed to reproduce this bug. Please
take a look at the LyX Introduction (Help -> Introduction) and report if
this bug is still present in that document. Also please create and
attach a basic LyX document in which the bug is present.
If you are fine with reseting LyX to the original settings, you can
delete the ".lyx" directory in your home directory. This can be
accomplished with the command "rm -rf ~/.lyx" (without quotes).
